Jose Mourinho has revealed that Eric Bailly will need surgery on his ankle injury if it does not respond to treatment and could face a significant layoff.

Bailly has missed United’s last eight games after he was hurt on international duty with Ivory Coast last month.

‘I think it’s serious,’ said Mourinho on Wednesday night. ‘We are trying a conservative treatment, but if he might have a surgical procedure, probably the doctor can inform.

‘it’s not a problem for me, we don’t want to speak about it.’

Asked if Bailly, United’s best defender, could potentially miss the rest of the season, Mourinho replied: ‘I don’t want to be pessimistic, I want to leave it with the doctor.

‘Tonight, we played with (Chris) Smalling and (Phil) Jones, with (Victor) Lindelof on the bench.

‘Marcos Rojo is injured but nothing really big, so all season we have problems with central defenders.’ MOU added.
