Scotland’s Eilidh Doyle secured 400m hurdles silver for the third successive Commonwealth Games as Jamaica’s Janieve Russell took gold.

The 31-year-old, who carried her nation’s flag at the opening ceremony, finished 0.47 seconds adrift of Russell in 54.80 seconds.

Doyle also finished second at Delhi 2010 and Glasgow 2014.

Meanwhile, England’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson dropped to third in the heptathlon after a poor shot put.

The 25-year-old could only manage 11.54m and trails leader Alysha Burnett of Australia by 28 points with Canadian Nina Schultz in second.

Johnson-Thompson, who won the World Indoor pentathlon title last month, was fifth after the opening 100m hurdles when she ran 13.54 seconds but moved top with a best of 1.87m in the high jump.
